RHDV2 is often a fatal virus that affects domestic and wild rabbits. It is not transferable to humans or other animals. We recently had our first case in Ontario last month in 2 house rabbits and now we have our first case in Windsor, Ontario; where one house rabbit has passed away from the virus.
We have always advocated for rabbits to live indoors due to the many dangers they face outdoors. With this virus, even indoor rabbits are at risk because the virus can live on objects like shoes. The only prevention is vaccination, but the vaccine is not yet licensed for use in Ontario, Canada.t this time practicing biosecurity measures is your best defense.
We have been practicing biosecurity measures long before this first positive case in Windsor. We are working with Dr. Kate Sweetman to acquire the vaccine and she has filed the necessary paperwork for approval. We need approval through the CFIA, but hopefully now that the virus is here, they will expedite the process.
For now, please refer to the infographic on how you can keep your rabbits safe and check out our website for more information on RHDV2. We are keeping our own rabbits safe by following the guidelines. As always, our rabbits are indoors only and our fosters have been instructed on home safety. We will update you as soon as we receive news on approval for the vaccine.
